Umeå University defends position on global Art & Design ranking


The QS World University Rankings have been announced for 2020, with Umeå University maintaining its 26th place in the category for Art & Design. The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking is an annual listing of the 1,222 top universities in 85 different countries.

The QS World University Rankings looks at the most prestigious universities globally in all major scientific disciplines. Rankings are based on a variety of criteria, with particular emphasis on academic reputation, based on comprehensive questionnaire data collected during a five-year period.

Umeå University's ranking in the Art & Design category is the highest that the university received in any of the 48 categories listed. Among European universities Umeå University placed 11th. The prominent position in the rankings can mainly be attributed to the rapidly expanding research environment at the Umeå Institute of Design.

Globally, the Royal College of Art tops the rankings for Art & Design for the sixth year running, followed by the University of the Arts in London and Parson School of Design at The New School.

Paul Thompson, vice chancellor at the Royal College of Art, puts the institution's success down to "embracing new areas of expertise and innovation from robotics and AI to computing and materials science."
