Non-EU Applicants

Swedish universities charge application and tuition fees for citizens from outside of the EU/EEA and Switzerland. Applicants who are EU/EEA or Swiss citizens should read this instead

Application fee

The application fee covers the costs associated with the processing of an application. The application fee is 900 SEK (Swedish kronor)(≈ €96 or $129). In order for your application to be processed, the application fee has to be paid in full upon applying.

Students who are registered for a course or programme at a Swedish university at the time they submit their application are not be required to pay an application fee.

The primary method of payment is online with a credit or debit card. This is by far the best method of payment as it is quick, efficient and secure. The application fee of SEK 900 is to be made online at universityadmissions.se

Tuition fee

Since July 2011, all non-EU/EEA applicants, are due to pay tuition fees for studies in Sweden. The tuition fee for non-EU students, covering one study year at Umeå Institute of Design, is SEK 270 000 (≈ €28 700 or $38 800).
All our Master programmes run for 2 years, so the tuition fee for the full two years is SEK 540 000 SEK (≈ €57 400 or $77 600).

Methods of payment for tuition fees

Students who are required to pay tuition fees will receive an invoice from Umeå University. More information at Umeå University website: https://www.umu.se/en/education/fees-and-scholarships

Scholarships

Umeå University, and Umeå Institute of Design, provide a few scholarships in the form of tuition-fee waivers. These are either a full (100 %) reduction, or a partial (often 50%) reduction. Since the autumn of 2011, UID has been able to secure funding to provide, on average, 8 full scholarships per year. For the autumn 2016 application round, UID secured funding to cover 5 full scholarships.
