IDEA silver to UID alumnus

Thiago Antonelli, an UID alumnus, who graduated from the Masters programme of Advanced Product Design in 2008, won silver at the 2011 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) arranged by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), for the concept he developed during his MA degree project.

The concept Jenny is an incubator for premature babies that rethinks the role of the parents in neonatal intensive care units. It allows the mother to be physically closer to her child and creates a calm division between the environment of the intensive care unit and the parents and their new-born.

Based on interviews with nurses in both Sweden, France and Brazil and with keywords like family and proximity during the ideation phase, Thiago developed an incubator that both considered the practical needs of the nursing staff and new solutions for addressing the known physical and emotional needs of the concerned parents, in order to facilitate a closer and warmer interaction between them and their baby.
