Malin Grummas, a student at the MA programme Advanced Product Design at UID, won gold in this year&s IDEA (International Design Excellence Awards) which is arranged by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA).
Her concept "CAS - Clean Air System" was one of only two projects awarded with gold in the Student Design category. The concept is a new type of intelligent filter-based breathing mask, primarily designed for fire fighters but, if produced also could be useful to other types of professional users. Malin Grummas developed the concept during the term project at the Advanced Product Design programme. The main focus was "design for user experience" and "people centred design" and the project was carried out in collaboration with the fire department at Umeå municipality. Besides Malin&s gold at IDEA, three of her fellow students, Nicholas Ross, Mansour Ourasanah and John Lee were honoured by being selected for the final.
Next on Malin&s busy agenda, besides a short summer holiday in Sweden, is an intense internship in Japan at Toyota Boshoku, which focuses on interior design for the Toyota Group. The 9-week internship, were Grummas will be developing a conceptual interior design for a specified Toyota model, will unfortunately prevent her from participating in the official award ceremony in Portland, Oregon in August. After the summer Malin Grummas will start her second internship abroad at Designit in Copenhagen.
