Advanced Product Design masters students awarded honorable mention in the prestigious ID student awards.

The American industrial design magazine, ID&s annual student awards were announced in the September issue. An honorable mention in the Student Design Review 2008 was awarded to a team of three students from Advanced Product Design at the Umeå Institute of Design, Vanessa Sattele, Fredrik Nilsson and Patrik Pettersson for their proposal for a new double-decker tram for Stockholm.

To help Stockholm deal with increasing pressure on its public transportation system, this trio collaborated with Alstom, a manufacturer, and Stockholm&s Lokaltrafik, the city&s municipal transit authority, to reduce inner city traffic. Designing for 2025, they proposed a driverless double-decker tram that would carry 200 passengers on a smaller footprint than standard trams. They took into account details such as the paucity of Scandinavian winter sun (transparent panoramic windows and a glass roof) and the need for street level access (more room for wheelchairs, luggage, and strollers), and then painted the vehicle light blue (the same color as old trams) to help it blend in with the city&s image. To quote the jury member, Chochinov, "It&s electrical and it&s mass, so it&s good right away."
